#2 – The Enduring Relevance of Books in the Digital Age

Summary in seconds: How technology and reader's age affect printed materials and their role in preserving and sharing information, along with an introduction to the first book I've selected for the upcoming "Book Review" edition.

The advent of the computer age has led to profound changes in the fields of information storage and sharing; in addition, the dawn of this digital era has affected the way written materials are presented.  We now have e-books, audiobooks and tablets capable of storing thousands of titles, however, books, in their traditional form, still play an important role in recording human experiences and achievements.

This technological boom has also created a generational gap in the way knowledge is preserved and shared. Therefore, while the older generation continues to rely heavily on printed papers, younger generations have dispensed the use of printed papers and are heavily dependent on digital gadgets to access their needed information.  And while I do not know what knowledge sharing methods would look like in the future, the printed papers will remain my window to the story of human experience. And through this window, I will select my books and present their content to the readers of “Book of the Month.”

My choice of books will often be outside the norms of our societies; for example, books that challenge our traditions and their fossilized beliefs, and books that promote people to “think outside the box”. Hopefully, these books will provide the background information that will aid Arabs and Muslims to build the necessary knowledge-base to understand their problems, identify options for dealing with these problems and then solve them.

I will try to select a new book every month, however, some books may need more than a month to cover their content. In general, articles will be published on a monthly basis.

Now let me introduce my first book that I have chosen for “Book of the Month”: “Die Empty by Todd Henry.”
